About Us
BNO News is a news organization that provides live coverage of breaking and developing stories, with impartiality, responsibility and fairness among its core values. We strive to provide fast, accurate and unbiased reporting.
BNO News has no business ties to governments, activist groups or any other organization that could affect our editorial independence. No other corporations have a stake in the company, which is privately owned by individuals.
BNO News traces its roots back to May 2007, when founder Michael van Poppel launched a Twitter account to provide real-time news updates. It quickly became one of the most popular accounts on Twitter with millions of followers and was acquired by NBC in December 2009, allowing Van Poppel to formally launch a news company.
BNO News introduced a subscription news wire service in early 2010, with NBC signing up as its first client. Other clients signed up in the following months and the company quickly developed an editorial staff with journalists in the Netherlands, the United States, Mexico, and elsewhere.
Over the course of a decade, BNO News has established a reputation for breaking stories early: Releasing an unpublished videotape of al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden in 2007, reporting the devastating earthquake off Japan even before shaking had stopped, reporting the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 before major news agencies, and being the first news source in the world to report North Korea’s nuclear test in January 2016.
In June 2015, the company re-established its social media presence when Van Poppel and James Valles founded BNONews.com, a website featuring text, video, and audio content. The launch marked the first time in nearly 6 years that BNO News was fully available to the public.
As of March 2016, BNO News’ digital platform reaches more than 7 million.
